I think people may have been turned off a little by Crystals looks, the dreadlocks and the piercing and her missing teeth? That's just my take. I believe you're right, but it's terribly sad all the same. I didn't watch much this season, but I think it was inevitable that Crystal wouldn't win --- she just wasn't the type of girl you could do the ugly ducking into a swan act with (not that she's at all ugly, I think she is quite beautiful in fact). She's not endowed with the body, style, teeth, or posture to enable that transformation and, to her credit, she wasn't willing to compromise and be transformed anyway, and her talent as a singer put her far enough above the rest that it carried her through to the final. She doesn't have missing teeth, btw, she just has the gaps between them that many Americans used to have before braces were ubiquitous. Coming from a land of the imperfect bite (England), it doesn't bother me in the slightest, but it really seemed to bother a lot of viewers, which I think is really shallow (but it's what we've grown used to in the land of perfect teeth, I guess). Anyway, I suspect she'll have a more successful career than the winner, Lee (who will do fine, no doubt). She probably won't sell the millions that Clarkson or Underwood have but she'll probably have a long and prosperous career all the same. Good luck to her.

It is not unusual for someone with juvenile diabetes to have bad teeth.

To be fair, though, Idol doesn't have a great record overall. Haven't the only successful females been Kelly and Carrie? 3 out of 8. If Idol were a sports team their manager would probably get sacked. Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Daughtry have all been quite successful. Many other AI contestants have developed moderately successful careers. Yes, but they weren't winners. When AI started, the whole premise was that the winner would get a big contract and, by implication, become a star. It was embarrassing when Daughtry proved that you didn't need to win to do that. The fact that non-winners are usually remembered better than the winners (with the exception of Carrie) just shows why many people don't take the show seriously anymore.

I think all AI can do is open the door for these people and after that it's all up to them on how far they want to go. I can't say that the credibility of the show is not there anymore because, again, none of these people (winners or not) will be known at all if not for AI.

For those of you who remember Phil Stacey, there is a short story about him in this month's issue of In Touch Ministries magazine. Heartwarming story to share for Father's Day. http://www.intouch.org/site/c.cnKBIPNuEoG/b.6069211/k.8525/Call_to_Action.htm

The fact that non-winners are usually remembered better than the winners (with the exception of Carrie) just shows why many people don't take the show seriously anymore. I don't know about that. AI is still the most watched show on American television, and for a ninth season, that says a lot about it's staying power and how many people continue to take it seriously -- as a popularity contest. There were still half-a-billion votes cast this season, so some people are still very keen! That's the key. There is not guarantee that the best singer will win -- in fact it's likely they won't unless they have the whole package, talent, the looks, and charisma -- which is why only Clarkson and Underwood, as winners, have become major stars. Chris Daughter is still the exception. He's the only one outside the top two to become a major singing star, and he didn't make it to the end because Idol is not a show for rockers, and he was always at a disadvantage. So if people are jaded, it's not because AI has abandoned the initial premise of one big winner. That happened way back in season two anyway, when Clay Aiken way outsold the winner, Reuben Studdard. Everyone knows that making it to the final two is probably all that's needed for a good career, if your specific talent will translate to album sales, but even then people still turned out to vote in huge numbers.

I think it comes down to the type of record. Carrie has done well because Country crosses age and ethnic barriers. Daughtry did well because rockers finally got some love on the show with a real talent. Ruben and Fantasia didn't meet expectations because R&B is a segmented style of music with alot of the country.
