Why do you believe some Christians cannot "hear" God speaking through His Word or sense His presence during their prayer times, worship times, etc?

Countless 'reasons'. One has to be listening not from our limited perception but to His opportunity to obedience. Probably God's voice is usually conformation of scripture(or the other way 'round but the key voice is scripture)in conviction as we(I)come into personal obedience to His vulnerability and recognition of responsibility to action appropriately.

The 'key' Voice is Scripture - I completely agree LC

This is very good.

Even Christians can have hearts of stone. Hearts that cannot possibly receive the Word of God. Whether it is written in the Bible or spoken through others around us.

On the other hand, some Christians try their best to hear the Word of God; but their Faith is perhaps too weak. This is through no fault of their own. Not everyone has strong, unshakable Faith.

The man whose son was ill was honest with Jesus when he said: I do have Faith, but not enough. Help me to have more. Mark 9:24.

Jesus had pity on him and healed his son; despite his little Faith.

I'm sure He'll forgive those who cannot hear the Word of God because their Faith is weak.

This reminds me so much of something I recorded in my blog today mvic.

Thanks!

If I may add something, you asked about sensory perception of God's Presence. While this is very cool, I don't think it's entirely necessary. Faith goes beyond sensory perception. One doesn't need to sense God's presence to know He's there, in my opinion.

Personally, I've sensed what I've thought was His Presence, and it may have been that or emotion. Either way, my faith tells me that He was there, regardless of how I felt.

As far as listening is concerned, I've made it my personal quest for the past few years to listen more acutely. I believe that you can hear God speak in any moment or circumstance if you listen.

Just my personal experience, for what it's worth. :-)

Yes - we also have to have a heart like Samuel when he said to the Lord: "Speak for your servant is listening."

One reason may be that they do not "practice His presence". Practicing His presence can be accomplished through "praying without ceasing" as Paul indicated. You must also take the time to spend time with Him, time that you spend alone with Him, seeking Him, praising Him, turning His word over in your head (meditating). For me, meditating and continuous prayer throughout the day are the most effective ways to hear Him speak to my heart. Everyone must find a way that works for them.

Another possibility with those who cannot hear Him is because they are taking a legalistic or religious approach, rather than a relational approach. They are trying to attain salvation by their own works, not by abiding in Him. There may be an outward approach, rather than an approach from the heart. Abiding in Him is the key to building a relationship with Him.

Another reason may be that they are not quieting their own mind or heart enough to hear from Him. When He speaks, it is a still small voice. Their own thoughts or their own voices may be drowning out His voice. They may be letting their own circumstances to cloud their "ear to hear". Another possibility is that they ARE hearing His voice, but just don't recognize it for some reason. Clearing their mind of everything else, and just waiting on Him as they read His word or turn His word over in their mind, they might find some new understanding that goes deeper than their current understanding. This is Him speaking to them, but they do not recognize it as such. This is the small still voice of our loving Lord.

Honestly, more often than not, I believe it is because of sin. Sin of selfishness... sin of independence (think we can do everything on our own), lots of sins that isolate us from God. We do not depend on our own works, either for salvation or our daily bread--we depend on God. You cannot serve two masters. You will end up loving one and hating the other. We either will do all we do for the Lord, and serve Him, or we will do what we do for ourselves. This can take place in various places in our life... be it at work... at school... in the car... at the bank, with our money...

But, that isn't the only reason. I also believe that, for a season, the Lord allows us to go through highs and lows where we learn to walk by faith. Sometimes, that means not feeling his presence as powerfully as we do in other seasons. Even though we may not feel His presence, he is always just a phone call away. :)

I think it's because many do not worship in spirit and in truth.

Hello little_1

Your question brought to mind the following scripture in Psalms, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." KJV

Iniquity is any host of hard feelings, attitudes that God doesn't like. He cannot look upon sin, so if one's heart is not pure toward God, He certainly will not listen.

Why do Christians use study Bibles? Because they cannot hear?

One of the very best things I learned from being a part of Bible Study Fellowship many years ago was this:

GET RID OF YOUR STUDY BIBLE.

DON'T USE STUDY NOTES.

LET THE HOLY SPIRIT BE YOUR TEACHER AND GUIDE INTO TRUTH.

I am so thankful I heeded their words.

I put my study Bible away and have been listening to His voice ever since.

This is not to say there is not a time and place for study helps. There most certainly is. But often people become dependent on man's voice---and that drowns out or squelches the whisper of God.

My quiet time is me and Him. My study time is something different.
