Hillary Clinton to accept Obama's offer of secretary of state job
President-elect Barack Obama reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration

Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.

Obama's advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton's foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.

Clinton would be well placed to become the country's dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.

Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the secretary of state job.

Is this a good move for Senator Clinton?

How do you feel about her being our next Secretary of State?

Well, I had a few more poll options, but they're not showing up.

Actually, I think this puts her in a better position in running for president the next time around.

President
Vice president
Speaker of the house
President of the Senate
Secretary of state.

Hmmm. Only 4 would have to die to make her president (Unless I missed one)

I don't think I'd take that risk personnally but obama is welcome to.

How do they come up with specialised in foreign affairs and defence? When I see:

quote:

Clinton has served on five Senate committees:
Committee on Budget (2001–2002)
Committee on Armed Services (since 2003)
Committee on Environment and Public Works (since 2001)
Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (since 2001)
Special Committee on Aging.

She is also a Commissioner of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (since 2001)

I'd don't get that impression.

I think its kind of weird, but its not like they don't have some commonalities. Its definitely a closer step for Hillary's resume for 2016.

That will free up a seat for someone in her Senate seat that hopefully a conservative will occupy.

Domestic policy aside, we need a creepily experienced and conniving politician to take care of diplomacy. Hillary has a good face for poker (bad if you're a politician; good if you're a Diplomat), but the real question is whether she will keep the Department Of State as non-partisan as it has been.

I am hopeful and worried at the same time. She could make an excellent Secretary of State. She could also be the Democratic version of Rumsfeld- just this time on the Department of State.

It's interesting to see how much the Obama adminstration is including folks from the previous Clinton adminstration. I guess he supposes the 'change we want' is a change back to 1999.

Nope, bad move. She needs to concentrate on being Senator from New York. The relationships Bill Clinton has with foreign investments and donations through his foundation and other interests make her a bad choice.

It looks like the Great One is more pragmatist than the campaign would have one believe. Hillary is also very pragmatic and has more the personality for this position than for President.

Were she not a Clinton, it would be a good call. The PR baggage is too great. The biggest problem Hillary has in politics is the fact she married badly.

You are either too young to know about their past,
or really and truly naive about the Clintons.

So, are you seriously saying that the Clintons would murder the four highest-ranking officials in the nation. And, yes, I've heard all the Vince Foster baloney.

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING????

I really thought Obama was smarter than to seriously consider Hillary for Secretary of State, and Hillary was smarter to actually consider it. Now I read that the announcment is going to held over until after Thanksgiving for it to become official.

I know, of late that I have heard some talk about Obama adopting one of Lincoln's strategies of filling his cabinet with political enemies, but I seriously doubt that if Lincoln was in Obama's place, Hillary is one political enemy that could not possibly fit in to his administration, nor would she really want to, if she could.

IF Obama's adminstration does not live up to expectations, or even tanks, Hillary's political career is over.

Then again, she's a Clinton, she may still find a way to salvage it. After all, she survived her husband's administration.

WAIT.

This could work out for everyone.

Obama gets Hillary to gets Osma bin Laden to surrender.

Osma and the top brass of al Quaeda, including the POWs at Camp Gitmo, takes up residence on some large estte complex out West, because our Justice Department will be unable to charge Al Quaeda for breaking any laws.

Our military if free to come home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama remains President indevinantly due to a new law, and loop hole the Democrats will find in the Constitution. Plus he will not have to worry about Hillary ever running against him.

Hillary remains Secretary of State as long as Obama is president, under the same law that keep Obama as president.

There is peace throughout the world because the world no longer has to worry about al Queade, its new home base is the United States.

(Did I just dreeam that, or read it somewhere?)

I really need to quit these firums, but I can't seem to. I am an addict.

So, this is how Obama got Hilary's support.

When did Hilary Clinton suddenly become so experienced and worthy of such a post? Just moments ago, someone on FoxNews (of which I'm increasingly becoming suspicious ) said she would bring "heft and clout" to the Obama administration.

WHAT the heck, you say!?!?

When did she cross the threshold to become "legit"?

Or is it just another case of, say it long enough and loud enough...?

I pray she does well. But I have a feeling when she reads a lot of those things Bush read or even what Condi had to read, she may change her stance on terrorism.

Just a few months ago Hillary called Obama naive in terms of his foreign stances.

Biden called him a "nice clean black guy"....

Boy, how soon we forget.

I forgot about her saying he was naive. So if he's naive on foreign stances, how will she ever do her job if he tells her what to do? Oi!!!
