For word meanings, The Key Word Study Bible is probably the best. It's available in most major translations. Here's a link to Christian Book Distributor's list of what's available.

I like the Thompson Chain reference. I love the way it works. When you want more info on a particular passage or topic, you just follow the chain of passages by the number given in the back. There is also a dictionary, concordance, and lots of character studies and information on each book, as well as archaeological help. There's not a lot of commentary by a person, which I like. It really is a good too to learn how to study the Word of God. Also, what version are you using? If you are having trouble with the language in the King James, try a New American Standard to help out. It's translated literally in plainer language.

I use the John MacArthur Study Bible. Without it, I'd be so lost. He explains the context of the book at the very beginning, then he explains the meaning/interpretation of each verses. I've never used any other study bible and don't know how this one compares with the others.

I use a variety of bibles, and prefer the NKJV. I have a couple of different versions. One is the Nelson Study Bible, and one a Life Principles Bible. I also have Celebrate Recovery NIV, and the New Living Translation. I also have a copy of the Amplified that amplifies words and phrases. I don't use it as much because I find it a little annoying having words that I already understand being amped repeatedly. They also tend to word things in a way that gives a completely different meaning, in my opinion. But every now and again, it does come in handy.

I have a variety of bibles and I believe it depends on what you're seeking. I'll list mine for reference purposes and include other options that haven't been mentioned. New Women's Devotional Bible - NIV The Discovery Study Bible - NIV The New Inductive Study Bible - NASB (Kay Arthur and Precepts) The Everyday Life Bible - Amplified The NKJV Study Bible The Apologetics Study Bible - NIV The Quest Study Bible - NIV (I gave this to my teen daughter) Resources: Bible Commentaries - I have the New Bible Commentary and The AMG Concise Commentary Bible Dictionaries - I have the New Bible Dictionary, Vines Expository and Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary Concordance - I use Strong's Exhaustive Concordance Biblical Customs - I have Vines Manners and Customs People of the Bible - I have The Baker Encyclopedia of Bible People Bible Study - How to Read the Bible Book by Book by Gordon D. Fee Lord Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days by Kay Arthur (inductive bible study) How to Study the Bible by Kay Arthur (more in depth overview of inductive bible study) Rick Warren's Bible Study Methods Software: There are a variety of programs available for free and for a price. Check Cnet and Zdnet for a few offerings. I use three personally. PC Study Bible, BibleSoft, and Libronix. I had Quickverse as well and another program but I felt that I was replicating my efforts. Check Bookstorecloseouts.com. They have many offerings at a substantial discount that you will pay full price for elsewhere. They are currently running a special for free shipping and I've never had a problem with them. Also join LifeWay's mailing list. They have their best sales around the holiday season. You undoubtedly will receive different opinions but keep in mind that the best resources are those that are well used. Go to a bookstore, have a cup of coffee or tea and sit down and see what speaks to you. I began with the Women's bible and one year later I'd amassed others and software to boot. I wish you luck in your study. God bless.
