I'm trying to locate the various branches of my family tree and having some trouble. I have some info but so many of the search sites are subscription only that I'm just not sure which site will prove the most help and which ones are actually worth it. I've tried a few of the free sites and have found nothing. I'm facinating by some of the family stories that have been passed down through the generations and want to find out more but I continually hit a brick wall. Anyone have any success with tracing their family heritage? We do know that my GGG-Gfather was a captain on a whaling ship out of Rhode Island and that my GGGmother was born on the ship 1854. He wrote letters to his dd off the coast of Fiji in July 1858 and wishing her a happy 4th birthday. We have little info on the family other than the name of a younger brother, Charlie and several older sisters. I've tried searching on whaling ships, captains and every census record for any of the names but have yet come up with nothing. Ideas?

Try birth records at the county courthouse. Burial records at cemeteries. Sometimes the records of certain companies will contain employee history/info. Military servce! great place to look! They have brigade, regiment, company info, muster rolls etc.. Pension services are another good place. State archives and state libraries records. Good Luck.

My cousin has been working on our geneaology for a long time and doing very well. He has had good luck with a particular site though I am not sure I can post it. The moderators can feel free to delete if they need to. http://www.ancestorhunt.com/mormon_church_records.htm If deleted, do a search with the mormom church records.

My mom has been doing her geneaology recently. She has had a lot of luck with ancestry.com. Most of her family is from England so the site was very good for her. When it came to American records, she contacted local cemetaries where she knew her family was, as well as local museums. Often, the people who work there are more than willing to help you find what you are looking for. Familysearch.org, which is the LDS church, has a lot of records and census results. You can also check out genealogy forums like genforum.genealogy.com and see if anyone else has information on your family. My mom met someone who turned out to be a distant family member over something like this tracing the same family line.

The US Gen Web site, usually has a lot of free information. usgenweb.org I've even found information doing a google search. The name may have been spelled differently in the Census records or the transcriber may not have been able to read the writting. Also he may have sailed out of R.I. but may have a been a resident in another state at the time of the Census. Good Hunting

Fortunately for me, my husband subscribed to ancestry.com. It has so many census records which are very helpful. I also use USGenWeb and RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project Global Search: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi Can you tell me the surname you are searching?

I'm reopening this thread to find out if anyone uses Family Tree Maker 2008? I bought it about a year ago, but didn't really get busy using it until recently. That's when I discovered that the software has problems connecting to the internet and there doesn't seem to be a fix??? Can anyone shed light on it and tell me if this is true or if you've found a way around it? Also, I got so bogged down in research that I've decided to go back to basics. I have ordered birth and death certificates for my grandfather and for my great-grandparents. I'm going to fill in all the blanks before moving further back.

Wanted to add that at your local morman library you can use the paid sites (ancestry.com etc) for free, as well as order stuff from Salt Lake. They also usually have some resources on hand (a small amount, but something).

I would recommend taking out a short subscription to ancestry.com. I did and was linked to LOTS AND LOTS of ancestors!! And it was so easy, I did it all while I was talking on the phone. Family Tree Maker (if it's the one I'm thinking about) is awesome! I'd love to get the newest software, but I'm not actively working on it right now and can't justify the cost.

Well that's the thing of it. Family Tree Maker is attached to ancestry.com, so the information in your software is supposed to link to the information online. For example, when I update info in the software, it should update my info on the website. But if there's no connectivity, then nothing gets shared. See what I mean? It's very frustrating!!!

Good news. I found a page for 2008 FTM patches and I was able to download and install the newest one. That solved the web connection problem. Yay! Oh--and I also activated my trial subscription to ancestry.com and you're right, it has a lot of good information!!!
