I wasn't sure where to post this, so I put it in here; the moderators can move it if they wish. I am wondering if somebody could explain the difference between chest voice and vocal fry. I can confidently reach a certain point, at that point, my voice turns rough and coarse. I can still get out another octave in that as long as I'm feeling ok, and didn't eat any sweets. I believe that would be vocal fry, right? Also, basses like Glenn Dustin, Eric Bennett, and Tim Riley etc, when they go low to a double low G, they have a very nice sounding tone. It sounds gruff, but still harmonious. Do they have a well trained vocal fry, or a deep chest voice? When practicing, should one strengthen the vocal fry range, or work on getting the natural chest voice deeper? Thanks in advance!

JD Sumner once told me (and the rest of us in the class) that by relaxing the throat, there is this "elevator" as he called it and once on it, the chest voice could go down indefinately. It is a little difficult to find w/out a lot of practice, but I do know it exists as I found it and went off the end of the piano a couple of times. I have heard others refer to this as a bass falsetto. As to the tone quality, it still takes a lot of diaphram support and keeping the tone focused in the frontal mask. The lower you go, the more difficult that is to accomplish. BTW, London Parris and Ken Turner both insisted that taking a nap before singing really helps to keep the throat relaxed.

Thanks for your feedback! This elevator, is this what a lot of these basses (Glenn Dustin, Aaron Mccune, Eric Bennett) are you using?

It is used for sliding down to really low notes. As I have been away from SG for a long time, I am not familiar with these men. I do know that Richard Sturbin (Oak Ridge Boys) used to use it.

When I met Richard, he was only about 20 years old, singing with the Stamps while JD was recovering from throat surgery to remove polyps from his vocal chords. (JD was a constant smoker) JD was just then starting to return, singing only one or two songs per set and Sturbin was scared to death of him. JD did not like having anyone fill in for him.
